JD.com enters the food delivery market, are the riders' interests truly protected?


  JD.com announced the launch of its food delivery service and claimed to pay social insurance and housing fund for every delivery rider. This move immediately sparked widespread online discussion, with many netizens believing it set a precedent for protecting the interests of delivery riders, while a large number of riders switched to working for JD.com. But is the situation really so straightforward? Recently, a news report revealed that although JD.com pays social insurance and housing fund for its riders, each order has a huge commission deduction, with a deduction rate as high as 40%! For a order paid by the customer 70 yuan, the rider only receives 47 yuan after deduction; for a 52 yuan order, only 30 yuan remains! Statistics show that each rider’s monthly deduction can reach 1,000 to 2,000 yuan, and the more deliveries they make, the higher the deductions. However, JD.com’s contribution to social security for each rider is only 10%. If a rider’s monthly income is 7,000 yuan, the contribution is only 700 yuan, which still leaves a huge gap compared to the platform’s commission. It is evident that the benefits paid by capitalists to riders are merely a cover-up for them secretly deducting more value elsewhere; it is not genuinely for the riders’ benefit. The greedy nature of capitalists will never change. In fact, social insurance and housing fund themselves are just formalities for workers; for example, work-related injuries are often difficult to prove, unemployment claims are hindered by flexible employment and strict standards, and medical insurance is of limited use due to difficulty in claiming benefits or inability to cover major illnesses. Pension insurance is even more distant. The remaining benefits do not significantly increase actual wages…  Paying social insurance and housing fund not only cannot improve the riders’ living conditions but also adds a heavier labor burden. According to delivery workers, when they do not pay social insurance and housing fund, they can earn 300 yuan a day in just 10 hours, but now they need more than 12 hours. Moreover, since JD’s food delivery cannot compete with Meituan in the traditional delivery field, its main business is long-distance delivery, which requires riders to use motorcycles instead of lower-cost electric bikes, resulting in significant fuel expenses. In the comment section of the news, some riders complain that the high platform deductions make their income barely enough to cover fuel costs. Riders bear an even heavier burden, suffering from intense labor, while capitalists make huge profits.

Seeing a 40% commission, I didn’t even feel it was “up to” because the work I did before had a commission of 70%-80%, plus various other additional conditions. 40% is considered “conscientious” in my industry, it’s really terrifying.

Earning ten thousand yuan a month would only leave them with two or three thousand. They can only choose between eating enough and having a place to live.

The ‘Five Insurances and One Fund’ have become increasingly useless as Nazi politics and the economic crisis worsen. Speaking of this so-called welfare system, it feels like a special insurance system under the state-monopoly capitalism of Nazi China, which is essentially an official insurance company of the Nazi state. This financial capital itself exploits workers’ worries about their livelihood under capitalism to concentrate the funds of the working people in society for financial speculation activities. So, when the Nazi state’s crisis isn’t so severe, it might still play some role, but when the crisis is serious, it immediately shifts the disaster onto the workers paying social security.
Many places are already unable to pay pensions gradually, and by 2035 they will be completely exhausted. Medical insurance is also becoming increasingly useless. Work injury insurance and unemployment insurance are completely useless in fascist states like Nazi. Under such circumstances, the ‘Five Insurances and One Fund’ are nothing more than taxes imposed by the bureaucratic monopoly bourgeoisie who control state power, forcing other capitalist enterprises and workers to pay, serving their state machinery.
