An old news article that I forgot to post, just for sharing, a bit waterish
The 2024 Shanghai marriage registration data has been released. The average age of first marriage in the city is 30.1 years old, with men at 30.8 years and women at 29.5 years. There were 90,167 marriage registrations and 44,864 divorce registrations; the average age for divorce registration is 43.5 years old, with men at 44.8 and women at 42.3.
Under strict restrictions such as the cooling-off period for divorce, the ratio of marriage to divorce registrations can still approach 2:1, and the number of divorce registrations is quite high. Meanwhile, the continuous increase in the average marriage age reflects the decreasing desire of young people to marry. Due to the economic crisis, many people have lost their jobs, wages have been continuously suppressed, while the prices of goods and housing in Shanghai remain high. In the past six months, videos titled “What kind of house can you rent in Shanghai for xxx yuan” have become popular on the Bilibili video platform, showing the living difficulties of Shanghai’s working people. Wages should cover the cost of raising children, but now many people’s wages are suppressed to the point where they can barely sustain themselves or are even unable to survive. As a result, the average marriage age in Shanghai has been greatly delayed. At the same time, the average divorce age of 43.5 years indicates that maintaining “marital relationships” is becoming increasingly difficult, and private family relationships are bound to face their demise someday.
