Over 2,506 Girls in Guangdong Have Experienced Sexual Assault, Nearly Half Under 14 Years Old
May 30, 2013
China News Service quoted a person in charge of the Guangzhou Women’s Federation saying that in the past three years, over 2,506 girls in Guangdong have experienced sexual assault, nearly half of whom are under 14 years old, and 65% of the perpetrators are acquaintances.
The report revealed that the Guangzhou Women’s Federation found in surveys that girls generally have poor self-protection awareness and lack necessary vigilance against sexual assault. Additionally, parents often have a complacent attitude towards their daughters’ safety. As for schools, communities, and media, the work of education on children’s sexual safety is also generally insufficient.
The person in charge also stated that Guangzhou officials will distribute 10,000 “Anti-Pervert Manuals” to girls and parents this June, and will hold a series of educational and promotional activities on girls’ sexual safety, including lectures on children’s sexual protection and safety knowledge.
“Find Teachers or Police for Protection”
On the other hand, Zhou Qiang, the President of China’s Supreme People’s Court, also advised primary and secondary school students at a public event on the 30th that they should be good at using legal means and appropriate methods to protect themselves.
Zhou Qiang also said that minors, when facing rights violations or danger, must seek protection from teachers or the school, and in society, they should use their brains and seek help from adults or police to protect themselves.
According to Chinese media reports, there have been 8 campus sexual assault cases in China over the past 20 days.
Former spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, Wang Xuming, has called on Weibo to advocate that this year’s “Children’s Day” theme should be “The Whole Society Acts to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse.”
