Recently, I have been studying the book “Drafts of Modern Chinese History” and came across the section on the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom revolution. For reference and learning, I looked for a map collection. This map collection has a good advantage: it includes many related materials, such as pictures of weapons used by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, photos of Hong Xiuquan’s former residence, and more comprehensive data. The maps are also quite detailed, for example, the Jintian Uprising not only shows the process from Jintian to the north attacking Quanzhou but also includes battle maps of various campaigns and a topographical map of Zijin Mountain, with plenty of illustrations. However, this book was published after the capitalist restoration, and the textual descriptions may have a biased stance. For instance, during the Jintian Uprising, it describes the religious atmosphere of the Taiping movement as intense, but the God Worshipping Society of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom was not truly a religious worship but rather a revolutionary authority of the peasant class.
Additionally, there is another issue: some place names in “Drafts of Modern Chinese History” do not match those in the map collection, so attention is needed.
