Recently saw this news, the Trump administration has revoked the visas of hundreds of international students for various reasons. Overall, as long as it is anti-American or anti-Israel, it will be targeted. Here is a series of data:
The National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA) stated that since mid-March, they have been receiving reports of international students and scholars having their visas revoked, records terminated in the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System), and even being arrested or detained. As of Monday (April 14), nearly 1,300 such reports have been received.
And the purpose of the Trump administration can also be seen from their words, which is to “maintain stability” and control public opinion:
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed at the end of March that the U.S. government’s goal is aimed at those involved in activities “contrary to U.S. national interests.”
According to BBC, the Trump administration uses the Immigration and Nationality Act to expel non-U.S. citizens whose actions conflict with U.S. foreign policy and national security interests. This is also part of Trump’s promise to combat anti-Semitism. Many of those whose visas were canceled participated in some form of pro-Palestinian activities.
Previously, The New York Times reported that Pompeo had also called for strict scrutiny of social media accounts of student visa applicants, especially to check for any comments criticizing the U.S.
It feels like the fascism in the U.S. is becoming stronger. After the White House official website posted a picture of Trump’s inauguration
, many people on X (Twitter) were openly criticizing Trump, because the U.S. still has formal freedom of speech. But now, with Trump making such decisions that go against his ancestors, it feels like he is trying to establish a dictatorship and become an emperor, similar to his previous claim to learn from Xi Jinping’s lifelong tenure. After all, democratic countries are capitalist countries, and eternal democracy is impossible. The U.S. is finally heading towards fascism.
In addition, it might also be due to escalating conflicts with China, leading to the repatriation of Chinese students.
However, there are increasing cases showing that even students not involved in anti-Semitic or related protests may have their visas revoked.
A Chinese engineering student told The Wall Street Journal that he was not informed of the reason for his visa revocation and is currently working with a lawyer to try to restore his legal status in the U.S. He said he spent so much money but is now experiencing such a nightmare and regrets coming to America.
Another Chinese student in New York said she was frantically checking her social media posts to see if there was anything that could get her into trouble or liked posts. She said her parents have already urged her to go back home. She never thought she would be afraid of the content she posts in the U.S.
