Some thoughts on Shi Tiesheng

Recently, after studying the text “Myself and the Earth Altar” in Zhao Xiu’s textbook, I was disgusted by the vulgar bourgeois preaching and human nature theory contained within. Therefore, I want to analyze the true face of Shi Tiesheng using class analysis methods.

Zhao Guo’s information: In 1969, Shi Tiesheng participated in the Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside Movement, voluntarily going to the rural areas of Yan’an, Shaanxi.
Health issues:
In April 1969, he returned to Beijing for treatment due to腰腿病 (腰腿病 -腰腿疾病,腰腿病). In June, after returning to the village, he served as a feeder.

External factors act through internal factors; Shi Tiesheng still thought too little publicly and too much privately. (From his later submissive behavior towards Zhao Xiu, it can be seen that he only wanted to infiltrate the revolutionary masses for opportunistic activities.) The disability external factor became the rallying call for his bourgeois思想 (思想 - ideology) attack. He displayed extreme individualism, venting his anger at his inability to engage in opportunistic activities. He smashed the labor成果 (成果 - achievements) of the working class and trampled on his mother’s concern for him (Comrades, my theoretical level is limited, I cannot analyze whether my mother’s concern was petit bourgeois concern or proletarian simple concern, please help me). “What’s the use of living!” Ostrovsky, despite his severe disability, could still pick up a pen and continue fighting, writing proletarian revolutionary literature. But Shi Tiesheng, instead, picked up the pen to create bourgeois毒草 (毒草 - toxic weeds). This is the difference between proletarian revolutionary writers and bourgeois court writers in reserve.

In summary, Shi Tiesheng is a typical example of a petty bourgeois who, after not thoroughly transforming his own思想 (思想 - ideology), degenerated into a bourgeois court writer, the vanguard of Zhao Xiu’s伤痕文学 (伤痕文学 - scar literature) art black line, and a loyal lapdog of official capital. The analysis is somewhat weak.
First of all, saying that he still had some enthusiasm for labor reform when he was a educated youth is unconvincing due to the lack of material. If he had works, letters, etc., it would be possible to study and see what kind of thoughts they reflect, but here only his biography is listed. Many scar literature writers were educated youths; many had already harbored resentment towards the Cultural Revolution during the Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside movement.
Later, it is said that he sensed the taste of restoration and began writing scar literature. Here, some analysis of his works should be provided to reveal his specific class stance and thoughts, but the lack of material makes this unconvincing. How to interpret the ‘smell’—praising, like in ‘Oh, Fragrant Snow,’ which during the early reform and opening-up period praised the pursuit of a beautiful pen case—such praise can be seen as a kind of materialistic stimulation ideology.
Also, there is no need to use cryptic terms like ‘Zhao Guo’.

That’s right, for example, the later famous scar literature writer Wang Xiaobo actually wrote black books secretly during the Cultural Revolution.
