On December 8th, local time in the United States, Trump gave an interview to an American TV station. During the interview, although Trump still talked nonsense, he was forced to make some “honest” explanations in the official TV interview before his election, thus exposing the imperialist ambitions of the US to maintain its fragile world hegemony through the Trump administration, sell out the national interests of the Ukrainian people, and use weak nations as bargaining chips to appease Russia.
When the host asked whether Trump would reduce “aid” to Ukraine during his term, Trump replied “possibly.” Saying “possibly” actually means “definitely,” because Trump never wavers when it comes to promises he believes he can easily give. For example, Trump used very absolute terms like “within twenty-four hours” and “must” to end the Russia-Ukraine war, and openly declared “we need to build a wall” regarding “illegal” immigration. As expected, Trump immediately added a “of course” after “possibly.” It shows that the host’s sudden question caught Trump off guard, causing him to habitually evade with a vague “possibly,” but once aware of the situation, he quickly gave a positive reply.
It is already a well-known fact that Trump wants to cut down US imperialist “aid” to Ukraine. The reason for this is because the strategy of US imperialism to maintain its world hegemony has changed.
Historical materialism believes that certain figures are always products of a particular class and social conditions. Individuals in class society can never act outside the interests of their class, regardless of their subjective thoughts. Unlike Trump who won in 2016, Biden who won in 2020 represents a different ruling strategy of the American bourgeoisie, different from full-scale war. In foreign policy, during Trump’s tenure, while pursuing appeasement with Russia and North Korea, he also intensified hegemonic activities against China, launched trade wars, and continuously strengthened economic sanctions and political offensive against the pro-Iranian regime, even resorting to drone assassinations like that of Qasem Soleimani in 2020. This greatly narrowed the scope of US enemies while increasing hegemonic conflicts with a small group of imperialist powers and their puppets daring to challenge US world hegemony. Why is this? It can only be attributed to the fact that since the collapse of the Soviet Union, US imperialism has been deeply mired in wars in Arab countries and Afghanistan, consuming vast national strength without establishing stable control locally. The global resistance against US imperialism has dealt heavy blows to its arrogance. Outside of Russian imperialism, the rise of the Chinese revisionist social imperialism in 2012 has suddenly posed a serious threat to US global hegemony. Under such conditions, especially under the blow from the masses worldwide, the exhausted US imperialism can only choose to “shrink” the front, ease hostility with some enemies, and focus on confronting the small number of imperialist powers and their puppets that threaten US hegemony the most. Thus, history repeats itself: just as the US eased relations with China in the 1970s, the Trump who represented this strategy also began to ease hostility with Russian imperialism and its puppet China.
Under these circumstances, now deeply involved in the Russia-Ukraine war and the Palestine-Israel conflict (which is essentially a revolutionary war of the Palestinian people and all progressive forces against US imperialist puppets Israel, with a progressive nature of national liberation war, so calling it a “war” is more appropriate than “conflict”). The Chinese and Russian imperialist bloc calls it the “Palestine-Israel conflict” to belittle the Palestinian people’s role as the main force of the Palestinian national liberation war, portraying it as a minor dispute between two forces with no significance, secretly opposing Hamas-led armed struggle, and denying the justice of the Palestinian people’s armed resistance. Meanwhile, the term “Israel-Hamas war” used by US imperialism exposes its support for Israeli fascists, slanders Hamas, and maligns the Palestinian people’s righteous struggle as a narrow “religious war” or “terrorist attack” with malicious intent. Therefore, the correct terminology should oppose the imperialist intentions of both sides, and “Palestine-Israel war” is the most appropriate.
The sinking US imperialism faces the same dilemma—unable to spend vast resources “aid” Ukraine and fight for control over Ukraine’s colonies against Russian imperialism, while increasing “aid” to Israel, intensifying suppression of Palestinian armed struggle, and focusing on confronting the aggressive Chinese revisionist social imperialism. It must be admitted that fighting on three fronts has exceeded US national strength, so the bourgeoisie can only reach a temporary truce with Russian imperialism, concentrate on fighting China, uphold the crumbling Israeli regime, and safeguard its core interests in the Arab region. Under these conditions, reducing “aid” to the pro-Ukrainian regime and letting Ukraine suffer at the hands of Russian invaders is inevitable.
Later, when the host asked whether Trump had already met with Putin, he evasively said he “had not recently” spoken with Putin, repeatedly dodging the specific question of whether he had spoken with Putin since his election, saying “I don’t want to talk about that,” or “I don’t want to discuss this,” showing guilt and even shamelessly saying “I don’t want to do anything that might hinder negotiations” (referring to negotiations with Russian imperialism on Ukraine). This fully demonstrates that even if Trump truly has not spoken with Putin, the ugly face of collusion between US imperialism and Russian imperialism to betray Ukrainian national interests and sacrifice the territory sovereignty of weak nations has been fully exposed. After this, Trump became more emotional, violently interrupted the host’s questions, turned the interview into his personal speech, and recited “peace scriptures,” trying every means to whitewash the crimes of trading Ukraine’s national interests for US imperialism. He falsely claimed that “the number of people killed in that war [Russia-Ukraine war] is unprecedented,” “cities have been razed,” “the country has been destroyed,” “soldiers, young and beautiful soldiers, tens of thousands are being killed,” “both sides have hundreds of thousands of casualties,” exaggerating the horror of war and intimidating the Ukrainian people who dare to continue resisting, demanding they lay down their arms, surrender to Russian imperialism, and accept the reality of Russian annexation of eastern Ukraine, or their country will only face “total destruction” and “ruin.” Yes, Trump did not forget to “popularize” the casualties of the Russia-Ukraine war, claiming from somewhere that Russian casualties reached 500,000 and Ukrainian casualties 400,000, attempting to exaggerate how “brutal” the war is.
Trump’s peace fallacies are completely untenable. Setting aside that Trump, who claims to oppose war, openly supports Israel fascists’ massacres of Palestinians, is it enough to blindly oppose all wars just because they cause casualties? For the Ukrainian people, the war they face is not a meaningless death march, but a fight against the Russian imperialist robbers who continuously eat away at Ukraine’s sacred territory, attempt to annex Ukraine, and rebuild the Tsarist Russian Empire. The Ukrainian people’s willingness to fight against Russian imperialism is rooted in their firm refusal to let their territory be swallowed by Russian imperialist invasion, and their desire not to suffer at the hands of Russian imperialism. The Ukrainian people, who love freedom, are fighting a just national liberation war, which is beyond reproach. If there is anything wrong with Ukraine’s side in the war, it is precisely that the Ukrainian people should not be subjected to the one-sided war route dictated by US imperialism and its Ukrainian puppets, but should more thoroughly take up arms and oppose Russian imperialist aggression. Trump’s attempt to attack the justice of Ukraine’s resistance to Russia is absolutely impossible!
On the other hand, history has shown that if concessions are made to Russian imperialism, there will be no way out, and true peace will not be achieved. Once upon a time, the reactionary sellout government of Ukraine meekly capitulated to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, allowing Russia’s evil scheme to succeed, thinking that this would satisfy Russian imperialist ambitions. But greedy Russian imperialism was not satisfied, instead inciting traitors in eastern Ukraine to create so-called “independence” movements, and after annexing Crimea, attempting to seize Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Luhansk, and Kherson provinces one after another. Only the fierce struggle of the Ukrainian people forced the Ukrainian traitor government to resist, preventing Russia’s complete annexation of Ukraine’s eastern regions. Confronted with these facts, imperialist leaders like Trump now talk about “peace” by merely reaching an agreement and ceasefire, as if Russian imperialism has suddenly reformed and sworn off war. Isn’t this absurd? Therefore, “Struggle for unity through fight, unity will survive; compromise for unity, unity will perish.”[1] If Trump’s so-called peace between the Russian and Ukrainian nations is to be truly realized, it can only be achieved through the relentless struggle of the Ukrainian people to expel Russian invaders, unite with the Russian people, and force Russian imperialism to recognize peaceful coexistence with Ukraine under the difficult internal and external circumstances. Trump’s peace utopia to oppose revolutionary war is absolutely impossible!
The current state of US imperialism is just like the British imperialism of that time. Once, British imperialist leader Chamberlain, in order to achieve the heinous goal of the British bourgeoisie’s anti-Soviet, anti-communist, and anti-people policies, colluded with the German fascist leader Hitler, known to all, and sold out the interests of weak European nations with the Munich Agreement, allowing Hitler to invade these small European countries, maintaining the “Sun Never Sets” empire of British imperialism. Today’s Trump is just like Chamberlain, attempting to sacrifice the weak Ukrainian nation, colluding with Putin to satisfy the insatiable imperialist ambitions of Putin and maintain the crumbling US world hegemony. However, “a country must be independent, nations must be liberated, the people must revolutionize, and this has become an irresistible historical trend.” The Ukrainian people’s demand to expel Russian invaders, recover lost territories, pursue democracy internally, and defend sovereignty externally is something that US imperialism’s schemes cannot stop. Ultimately, the fate of the world is not decided by one or two superpowers, but by the people. The evil plots of US and Russian imperialism will inevitably fail, and the final victory will belong to the Ukrainian people. They will inherit the glorious revolutionary tradition of the Ukrainian people throughout history and achieve the true liberation of the entire nation.
