It is reported that the rider had submitted his resignation to the delivery station a month prior. On November 4, 2025, a food delivery rider in Shijiazhuang was stabbed with a knife after being owed wages and assaulted by two station managers during a wage dispute. It is reported that the rider had resigned from the delivery station a month earlier. During the resignation process, the station managers unjustifiably deducted 80% of his wages, and the delivery fee was reduced from 5 yuan per order to 1 yuan per order, totaling about 3,000 yuan. Moreover, when the rider confronted the station managers over this, they insulted and assaulted him—one of them even choked him, while the other pushed him repeatedly. Facing threats to his personal safety, the rider drew a small knife and stabbed the two men. Subsequently, the two were taken away by ambulance, and the rider was detained and controlled by the police.  After the incident, two different voices quickly emerged. The public believed that both the wage deduction and the verbal and physical abuse were initiated by the two station managers first. They argued that the rider’s act of stabbing the two in self-defense was justified. They strongly supported the oppressed and exploited, viewing the rider’s actions as righteous and reasonable.  However, another perspective claimed that “carrying a knife indicates premeditation,” and that the rider should be charged with intentional homicide because he chose such a method to resolve the issue, despite having access to formal channels. This view questions: Is it not true that the station managers’ wage deductions, insults, and beatings were “unintentional”? When workers are cornered and desperate, stabbing someone is considered “intentional homicide,” yet exploiters who use their power and economic superiority to slowly, indirectly, but massively impoverish, starve, and cause death—are they not responsible for “intentional homicide”? What kind of logic is this? These people talk about “severely punishing crimes” but deliberately ignore the causes, consequences, and social roots of so-called “crimes.” In reality, contrary to their claims, the real perpetrators of intentional homicide are the station managers, platform parasites, and the capitalist exploitation system.  In October 2024, a food delivery worker in Putian, Fujian, suddenly collapsed and died despite rescue efforts in front of a burger restaurant. In April 2025, two delivery riders—Liang Jun, 45, brother-in-law from Shandong, and Yuan Peng, 47, brother-in-law—died suddenly within ten days of each other. Liang Jun often worked continuously for a day and night, sleeping only two hours before his death; Yuan Peng worked 12 hours daily. In July, a female delivery rider in Yibin, Sichuan, drowned while riding past a local river. In October, 24-year-old rider Wang from Bijie, Guizhou, died suddenly after running an errand with a cold… Similar incidents of rider fatalities are countless.  Excessive working hours and traffic accidents are often direct causes of these events. Statistics show that in 2021, 62.6% of riders worked more than 10 hours daily; in 2023, there were 12,000 traffic accidents involving delivery riders nationwide, with the rate of accidents among riders about 6.7 times higher than the national average. The reason riders are forced to overwork and frequently violate traffic rules is the exploitation by station managers and platforms that drain their resources.  In 2020, with an average of 6.4 working days per week and 9.8 hours per day, 4% of riders earned less than 2,000 yuan per month, 36% earned between 2,000 and 3,999 yuan, and 44% earned between 4,000 and 5,999 yuan. Hard labor only yields meager wages, most of which are deducted by station managers. Is there anyone who can blame the Shijiazhuang rider for taking “extreme actions”? Besides these “extreme actions,” he had no other options left.  Wage deductions and arrears are common in the food delivery industry. A rider in Fengtai, Beijing, said that at least 10% of riders at his station had wages owed. In February 2025, many riders in Xin’an, Henan, reported to the local government about fines imposed under various pretexts, but the official response was that “riders and companies do not have a direct employment relationship,” and they advised riders to “consult a professional legal advisor.”  In October 2023, Du Bei, a rider in Tangshan, Hebei, suffered a work injury while delivering food, with his left thumb fractured in a comminuted fracture. After 661 days of legal proceedings, he still has not received compensation.  Crime is an isolated struggle of individuals against the ruling relations, and individuals who violate the interests of the ruling class cannot escape punishment. In 2024, delivery rider Zhang Hao requested the station manager Ma Xiaohui to dispatch orders but was unjustly refused and fined 200 yuan; the next day, Ma Xiaohui threatened Zhang Hao by lowering the delivery fee from 5 yuan to 3.3 yuan per order. In extreme anger, Zhang Hao stabbed Ma Xiaohui, hoping to “teach him a harsh lesson” and “make him suffer some pain.” After stabbing him four times to avoid vital areas like the neck and heart, Zhang Hao stopped voluntarily.  However, despite this clearly being intentional harm (even attempted murder), the court sentenced Zhang Hao for intentional homicide, and the procuratorate even requested the court to impose the maximum penalty—death penalty. The isolated individual is powerless before the ruling class wielding violence, but the unity of workers is an unstoppable force.  In April 2023, hundreds of riders in Shanwei, Guangdong, went on strike to protest the platform’s new regulations—fining 50 yuan for not logging in for a day, canceling various subsidies, and reducing the delivery fee from 5 yuan to 3.8 yuan per order. After a week-long strike, the platform was forced to restore previous prices and some subsidies. The solidarity and struggle of Shanwei riders won them a partial but valuable victory over the platform.  A finger may break easily, but five fingers clenched together form a fist. Workers, unite!
