Maternity and Child Health Hospital exposed for hidden pinhole cameras, officials quickly delete revealing video, no room for improvement illusions

Blogger “Shadow Does Not Lie” received a tip about hidden cameras at Henan Anyang Women and Children’s Health Hospital in October. The tipster claimed the filming took place in the “hospital’s lounge.” Subsequently, he and his team visited the Women and Children’s Health Hospital in Anyang City. After five days of investigation and surveillance, they discovered a hidden pinhole camera on October 17 inside the hospital, installed in the changing room next to the breast treatment room on the second floor. The room contained a two-meter-high, one-and-a-half-meter-wide wardrobe, a resting bed, a table, and a washbasin. After reporting to the police, local authorities collected evidence and dismantled the illegal camera.

The blogger stated, “(The camera) was hidden very deeply,” and looked like a charger from the outside, making it very deceptive. If someone accidentally discovered it, its purpose might not be immediately obvious. It was pressed against a piece of iron plate. According to the dismantler, the iron plate was used to fix the camera’s position, keeping the voyeuristic angle unchanged. The device was powered by an external waterproof shell and waterproof tape, extending five or six meters from the ceiling and connecting directly to the ceiling of the corridor outside the room. It was not only physically well concealed but also employed professional electronic technology. The camera “uses an independent power supply, not controlled by the room’s switches, capable of continuous 24-hour recording,” indicating a highly professional installation method. On the evening of November 8, the blogger told reporters that he received a call from staff at the Doufurong Police Station of the Beiguan Branch of the Anyang Public Security Bureau, informing him that the police had caught the person responsible for installing the camera. “It was an individual act, and administrative punishment has been imposed.” It appears that the criminal has been caught and punished, and the police have once again “punished evil and promoted good.” However, how can the social system of Zhongxiu (a pseudonym for the society) uphold justice when it is the very source of such issues? And how can the police, who are known for repression, truly fight crime? In this case, the final judgment on the criminal was only administrative punishment, not criminal prosecution. Legally, Article 283 of China’s Criminal Law stipulates that illegal production, sale, or use of specialized spy equipment or eavesdropping and photo-taking devices shall be punished with imprisonment of up to three years, detention, or control, and may also be fined or subjected to a single penalty; Article 284 states that illegal use of such equipment causing serious consequences shall be punished with imprisonment of up to two years, detention, or control. The pinhole camera equipment in this case generally falls under the definition of specialized eavesdropping and photo-taking devices. Its use involves a purchase, which implies a manufacturing and supply chain. Besides criminal law, civil law and public security regulations also prescribe penalties for such acts. It is clear that the police of Zhongxiu do not intend to pursue the manufacturing and sales chain behind these devices, nor do they see the violation of women’s dignity and privacy as “serious consequences.” They simply raise and lower their hands, showing no real effort to punish the offenders according to law. Essentially, Zhongxiu’s society is not about justice but about covering up crimes and reinforcing gender oppression. In capitalist societies, women are regarded as inferior labor commodities, mere tools for sexual gratification. Wherever women go—be it in hospitals or changing rooms—they are still viewed as sexual objects, and men will go to great lengths to invade their privacy and satisfy their desires. Peeping, harassment, rape… such gender oppressions are rampant because their roots lie in Zhongxiu society.

“Shadow Does Not Lie” is a microcosm of those who oppose oppression under the most brutal patriarchy and capitalism enforced by Zhongxiu today, standing from a petty-bourgeois reformist position. They do not represent the interests of the masses but are “anti-mafia but not anti-corruption,” disguising their resistance as “justice fighters” while steering the struggle toward reformism. For the entire “Shadow Does Not Lie” team, their main goal in exposing and debunking is to attract traffic on online platforms and monetize social hot topics through sales and other means. Even before this incident at the women and children’s hospital broke out, the blogger’s Douyin store was already selling products related to their videos, such as “anti-peep detectors,” closely linked to social hot issues. Another popular exposé video, released on September 23, revealed pinhole cameras in several hotels and guesthouses in Shijiazhuang. After the video went viral on major platforms, the Zhongxiu police announced the case was solved within a day, arresting three suspects. Netizens commenting on the video pointed out that the issue of cameras in Shijiazhuang hotels had already been disclosed in July, and the “Shadow Does Not Lie” video was coordinated with police actions. Shortly after the video was released, the blogger issued a statement apologizing for causing “misunderstanding” among Shijiazhuang merchants, damaging the city’s image, and promised to produce a positive video to restore its reputation at the request of local authorities. Since then, they have avoided mentioning specific city names or locations in their exposés. The “Shadow Does Not Lie” team’s apparent cooperation with authorities exposes their true stance.

The last video from “Shadow Does Not Lie” was posted on September 25, and the exposé on the hospital’s hidden cameras was “video has been deleted.” If exposing hotel peeping incidents could be used by the authorities to promote “social justice,” even prompting the Shijiazhuang leadership to “accept” them, then the scandal involving the women and children’s hospital, a government-affiliated institution, touches the core interests of the monopolist bourgeoisie. Merely revealing some women’s oppression enrages and terrifies Zhongxiu. When faced with this event that could ignite public anger and struggle, the authorities quickly deleted the video to minimize “negative social impact.” People like “Shadow Does Not Lie,” advocating reformism, only seek official acceptance, and their fate is inevitably suppression by their masters. Under the most reactionary, bureaucratic, monopolist bourgeois dictatorship, even the slightest reformist political movement is forbidden. This incident serves as a wake-up call: any solo effort aimed at reform cannot fundamentally change the reality of class oppression. Only united revolutionary action around the proletariat can overthrow the reactionary ruling class sitting atop us.
