Asking about the situation in Nigeria

Under the long-term destruction of the Niger Delta by the Nigerian government and oil companies such as Shell, the local environment has been severely polluted, and the people’s livelihoods are impoverished. After failed protests and demonstrations, many armed groups have emerged, including the “Niger Delta Avengers” (NDA), which is said to have split from the “Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta” (MEND) that had already surrendered to the Nigerian government, in order to continue armed resistance. They attack oil companies in the Niger Delta region, sabotage oil and gas facilities, and weaken Nigeria’s economy. Their goal is to establish an independent state in the Niger Delta. However, they also see Trump as a hope for the oppressed minorities of the Niger Delta. Their exact nature and policies towards the people are unclear. Does anyone have information about this?

The early well-known “Niger Delta Liberation Movement” competed with other armed groups such as the “Niger Delta Militia” for control of the port of Hacot; it could not persist with armed struggle, and later MEND was bought off by the government, disarmed, and gained political power, taking the position of governor of Rivers State. Its leader, Tompolo, who was once the government’s top wanted criminal, transformed into a powerful ally of the government and a billionaire, walking the path of collusion with the government. On November 1, 2024, its spokesperson Jomo Gbemobo claimed to be ready to support security personnel in protecting oil facilities from attacks, condemned the threat posed by “some former militants and agitators” to the Niger Delta oil facilities, and pledged full cooperation with security forces to ensure the arrest of individuals or groups threatening oil exploration and their supporters.
